Linda’s Place
Kentucky
Linda’s Place brought 87 units of new affordable rental homes in two elevator-serviced buildings for seniors aged 62 and older to the town of Shepherdsville, Kentucky. The development provides much needed affordable housing for seniors in the area. There are 71 one-bedroom units and 16 two-bedroom units at the property. This innovative development features a variety of amenities geared towards seniors, including a seniors-focused fitness room, a computer lab providing access to MyGait Senior Computers, a community garden with raised garden beds, dishwashers, over-the-range microwaves in all units, and in-unit washer and dryers.
According to The Gap, the National Low-Income Housing Coalition’s authoritative 2024 report on the dire need for new affordable housing from coast to coast, there are only 47 affordable and available homes for every 100 low-income individual or family that needs one. The need is even more acute for low-income seniors, making Linda’s Place an important new community for the county.
Linda’s Place is designed specifically to create a community feel and a sense of belonging – something that’s essential for seniors. There are two buildings centered around a community courtyard. The development also features a shaded gazebo and grilling area, further allowing residents to enjoy the beautiful setting just outside of their homes. There’s also a senior-focused fitness room to help promote physical health for the residents, a community garden with raised garden beds, a computer lab, and an on-site dog park.
Linda’s Place has a ‘pets allowed’ policy for all units with a dog park included at the property. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (CDC), pets “increase opportunities for exercise and outdoor activities, [contribute to] better cognitive function in older adults, and [provide] more opportunities to socialize.” Having a pet is also linked to health benefits such as decreased blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and triglyceride levels. Pet ownership is even associated with reduced feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and PTSD.
